Maddie's well aware that she might lose everything - and then lose everything again, and again
So, Maddie Price is back! What's happened to her since we last heard of her?
When we pick up Maddie's story in series three we are nine to ten months on from when things all started. And so she's been through it all: all the things at Heathrow and what happened after that. And then she leaves on her little boat, while she's getting shot at by Gillison's men.
She's still got that drive, that determination to get back to Brad, her fiancé and to her life as she knew it back in the States. But she's on her own. She's lost Redgrave, her new friend. As an aside, personally, I was so sad about the fact that the series had to lose Terry Malloy. The fans said it; we said it. His was such a lovely character. But, yes, Maddie is still around and for her life is about loss upon loss. Maddie's well aware that she might lose everything - and then lose everything again, and again.
She has been emotionally and psychologically damaged over this. If, before this, she was clinging to the hope that she and Redgrave could make it out, or that something positive might set them in the right direction – all of that hope is dashed.
That is heroism. We like heroes. I think Maddie is a hero.Chase Masterson
It's so easy to be unhappy in life and take all the things in our lives for granted. I mean, before all this, Maddie clearly had a good life. But one day in the future any of us could wake up and wish that we had back exactly the life we have today. And I think it's a great lesson to take from the series: being grateful about what we have.
After escaping on the boat, Maddie was outside of London for quite a bit. I mean, obviously, the British countryside is beautiful, and she mostly kept her own company. She lived off the fat of the land, ate vegetables and stuff. But then she comes to realise that if there is any way back home she's not going to find that staying out in the country. She needs to find a radio and that's why she heads back to the city.
As she heads back into the capital, does she have a plan?
Well, that's the question - what can she do? Okay, if she finds out that her fiancée is alive that would be a fantastic thing. But there are certainly no aeroplanes taking off for Saint Louis. Does America still even exist? So what does she do?
Maddie is still really resourceful. She takes charge when she needs to. It's not something that comes without its own pain. I mean, sure, I get to help myself and I get to help others. But there are things that happen through doing that that tear her apart inside. And yet, there's nowhere to go but forward.
The characters in Survivors don't really get a chance to stop and think about PTSD (Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder), or the incredible blinding pain that would come from having been through all this, and seeing your life just wash away before your eyes; people do you care about; people that you grow to care about; people that you count on - all lost to you. 'Uncertainty' is really such a huge theme in this.
The tone of the series remains pretty tough, then?
It is heavy. It's really heavy, yeah: the themes of it; the things that it encourages us to think about, to face; the parallels it suggests in our own lives. Most people who are listening to this are never going to be caught in any kind of deadly epidemic. Chances are – of course, I don't know for certain, but – chances are. But we still all do need to think about the theme – what do you have when you lose everything? You have who you are. And you've got to face to face with that, and only that. And that will determine whether you get to have a future.
Maddie Price seems to be a character that you have a strong sense of empathy and identification with
What do you have when you lose everything? You have who you are.Chase Masterson
I like Maddie, a lot. And I think that Maddie is a strong voice within this show. I think that we look to Maddie as someone who's going to survive and who doesn't take no for an answer. She will find a way, and we like to see that part of ourselves that would prevail. Not only for ourselves, but for other people. The part that is strong enough and moreover smart enough to find a way where there is no way. To have that internal grit that can overcome literally anything. And that is heroism. And we like heroes. I think Maddie is a hero.
Given the nature of the subject matter, do you have to approach your work on Survivors in a different way to that you adopt on other Big Finish series?
Well, you have to have realism in everything you do. It doesn't matter how fantastical or crazy – it's always got to be rooted in realism. The storytelling is the important thing. The audience has to be able to believe you, or at least believe that you believe you: if that's not there, then you have no identification with the truth of the story, with its themes or with the audience. So you need that sense of realism in everything that you do.
But with, for example, Vienna, which I love, there's a wink. There's a little bit of a smile and a wink. It's all very real, but it's also a little heightened, because there's humour and there's the comedy of it. It's not so much that it's science fiction – because science-fiction is extremely real – but there's just this... zing to it that Survivors does not have.
How would you rate Maddie's chances of getting back to the USA?
Well, I don't know how it's going to happen – but, dammit, Maddie is going to get home... If there's any way she can do it, she will get home. That's all I can say.
The ninth series of new Survivors audio adventures is available to buy (in CD and download formats) from Big Finish.
"There's still great potential here, as the UK begins to emerge from the dark ages of The Death, for more stories set in this uniquely realised dystopia, should sufficient numbers of those who have yet to purchase copies of this extraordinary audio series belatedly recognise the error of their ways. If that doesn't happen, this will remain a stunning finale for what must be celebrated as a consistently compelling audio drama, 5/5"

"This latest boxset delivers an impressive mix of large scale, high stakes and small scale, intimate stories which set in motion the events which will come to an explosive conclusion in the final set in this current run of post-apocalyptic dramas, 5/5 " - Cultbox
The seventh series of new Survivors audio adventures is available to buy (in CD and download formats) from Big Finish.
"At times harrowing, at other moments uplifting, and never anything other than completely riveting listening, this latest series of Survivors audios delivers drama that is simply unmissable. As the series leaves behind the timeline of the TV incarnation of the show, Big Finish's writers, cast and crew are all clearly brimming with fully deserved confidence. The two series of new Survivors audios coming in 2018 could scarcely be a more exciting or (in the best sense of the word) a more unpredictable prospect, 10/10" - Starburst
The sixth series of new Survivors audio adventures is available to buy (in CD and download formats) from Big Finish.
"After five extraordinarily well-received box sets, each of which offered a self-contained and themed collection of four episodes, the sixth series of Survivors audio adventures confidently takes a fresh approach... It's a liberating shift in format and, under the keenly judged direction of Ken Bentley, these scripts make exceptional use of the opportunity to tell diverse, if equally compelling, standalone stories, 10/10" - Starburst
The fifth series of new Survivors audio adventures is available to buy (in CD and download formats) from Big Finish.
"As it explores the highest stakes possible, this develops into the most thrilling and compelling set of stories in Big Finish's Survivors series to date: which, considering the exceptional quality of the drama in the preceding four instalments, is quite some achievement. This is extraordinary, exemplary human drama; by any standard, 10/10" - Starburst
The fourth series of new Survivors audio adventures is available to purchase (in CD and download formats) from Big Finish.
"Intelligent, literate and superbly scripted and performed, this is a post-apocalyptic drama of the highest possible calibre. Determined to avoid the predictable tropes of that genre, it invites its listeners to navigate a moral minefield in a way that few other dramas of this type would attempt. This comes recommended without reservation" - Starburst
