A brief history of the second re-release of Survivors series one on VHS

Front and back covers of all three volumes of DDHE's video release of Survivors series one

IN PARALLEL WITH the release of Survivors series one on DVD in 2003, DD Video issued the first series on PAL VHS - the third time in ten years that series one had been made available on sell-through video.

The videos were issued as three VHS double-packs, with each cassette containing two episodes (and the sixth and final tape offering the concluding three episodes of the series).

The double-packs were made available individually, and also as a box-set of six cassettes (in a plain-black cardboard container).

By 2003, interest in the sell-through video format was already fast waning, and this third VHS release for Survivors first series was inevitably overshadowed by the parallel DVD release (which was accompanied by a full-colour booklet and a range of special features; neither of which the video release offered).

By the following year, when series two of Survivors was released on DVD, there was no parallel VHS release - confirmation of how modest the previous year's VHS sales had been. DD Video's re-release of the first series on VHS brought to an the decade-long life of Survivors on retail video.

Like the original series one VHS release (by BBC Worldwide) and the first series one re-release (by Sovereign Video), copies of the series one DD Video release regularly appear on online auction sites - although the DD Video release is the rarest of the three.
